This two (2) day course covers the principles of management accounting. It provides participants with the general knowledge, skills and attributes to effectively manage, analyse and report on accounts in organisations.

Participants will also develop a practical approach to various financial terms and concepts such as depreciation, cash flow, balance sheets, and budgets.

  • Resources for learning about the governing organisations

The accounting cycle

  • Four phases of the accounting cycle.
  • Key underlying concepts, including cash vs. accrual method of accounting

The key reports

  • Balance sheets and income statements.
  • Review cash flow statements and statements of retained earnings.

Keeping score

  • Chart of accounts and single vs. double entry accounting.
  • Activities throughout the module.

Day Two

Understanding debits and credits

  • Identify accounting terms: debits and credits.

Financial analysis toolbox

  • Define sources of financial data and decision-making tools.
  • Read an annual report.
  • Calculate common ratios.
  • Identify unnecessary information.

Identifying high and low-risk organisations

  • Guidelines for identifying high and low-risk organisations.

The basics of budgeting

  • Define a budget.
  • Integrate own budget with organisational budget.
  • Learn budgeting process.

People and numbers

  • Examine various scenarios regarding team finances.
  • Activities throughout the module.
