Creating an Adaptable and Resilient Workforce

Face-to-face duration: 6 days

Background

The amalgamation of local councils across Perth has raised a need to equip managers and staff with training and coaching in emotional and behavioural competencies. The aim of this program is to support them during this time of change.

A resilience training program, well planned and facilitated can be a source of significant positive benefit to the organisation - from tangible improvements through to the bottom line. This includes increased productivity, efficiency, retention of top talent and knowledge through to intangible benefits such as a more adaptable, dynamic service and performance-oriented culture; improved employee engagement and customer satisfaction levels.

To realise the productivity and efficiency benefits sought by the amalgamation, it is critical that:

  • managers and staff from two different organisational cultures learn to work collaboratively and cohesively as one team
  • managers and staff learn to stay optimistic and direct their energies towards driving results through periods of ambiguity and uncertainty in terms of role and job function
  • managers and staff learn to adapt to new management styles and working in a new environment
  • managers and staff are resilient to situations that may be perceived as setbacks, including the need to learn new skills and operating procedures

A development program that focuses on strengthening the resilience of employees will create considerable value for organisations going through such change.

Program Aim

Working in cooperation with LGMA WA, this program aims to equip managers with the skills to form a cohesive team and to create a culture that is highly adaptable and resilient.

The program also aims to equip staff with the skills to adapt and cope with change while staying optimistic and resilient.

Benefits of Attending

  • This program aims to equip both managers and staff with the following skills:

    Managers

    • knowledge of the steps to form a cohesive team
    • learn to become a more confident leader and team builder
    • understand how to lead in a way that strengthens the resilience and adaptability of your organisation.

    Staff

    • ability to adapt to change and cope with uncertainty
    • ability to stay optimistic and resilient
    • ability to get the most out of the experience for themselves and their organisation.

Program Preparation

Due to the nature of this program and to ensure its effectiveness, it is recommended that each participant completes a personality assessment (e.g. DISC).

This is to ensure that each participant understands their personal behavioural preferences and how they tend to deal with change.

This tool also assists with learning how to communicate effectively with different personalities and people from different cultural backgrounds. This will enhance relationships among the team and improve business outcomes.

Program Structure

For behavioural change to be effective, a program should incorporate the elements of ‘awareness’ (of the present state, the need and desire to change, and a future state that inspires); ‘reinforcement’ (e.g. through coaching, observing and celebrating success) and ‘spaced repetition’. Institute of Management helps your organisation achieve this by incorporating the following into the program:

  • Application of a personal commitment to apply something learnt (by setting goals - both professional and personal)
  • Share in participant “wins” and celebrate successes (through some form of recognition)
  • Assessment tools to strengthen awareness, e.g. 360 assessment of leadership competencies, strengths and non-strengths, personality profiling, team culture surveys and facilitating relevant debriefs that encourage reflection and action to address “gaps”
  • Assigning an internal mentor (preferably someone who has graduated from such training) to have the participant discuss challenges, what they’ve learnt, act as a sounding board for issues, and generally be a source of encouragement to support the participant in their development objectives
  • Providing 1-on-1 coaching from an external facilitator to address specific personal challenges that they might not feel comfortable bringing up in a public forum, to assist with meaningful interpretation of 360 feedback and to have someone hold them accountable for taking action on the goals they set
  • Delivering course content in a logical order, each module reinforcing and building on the topics of the previous segment and including spaced repetition.
